Go Heels!
So how awesomely sexy was that game of basketball?
I am, of course, writing of UNC v. Duke, last Saturday, March 8th, 2008, 76-68. The dunk, Ty’s steal, Tyler’s flat-footed block of a three point shot, Q’s cool 3-pointer, the fact that it was Duke’s senior night…what wasn’t to love about that game?

Well, I didn’t love that the referees appeared to not understand this strange new concept of “calling fouls” but, hey, it all turned out well in the end.

At least they didn’t call fouls on both sides. I loved the three Duke flops I caught that didn’t get a call. Ha ha!

What gets called a “foul” seems to be undergoing a major revision. The last Stanford UCLA game had the big UCLA guys hedging on screens and bodying the Stanford point guard practically to half-court. No foul. But they’re still calling those little reach and hand-checks that are hardly a touch. Go figure. I think the refs got together and decided their games are taking 2.5 to 3 hours and they’re only getting paid for 2, so to shorten the games, call fewer fouls.
